New South Church (second) is dedicated.

December 29, 1814

Architect: Charles Bulfinch. Built of Chelmsford granite the octagonal building is located on Church Green at the corner of Summer Street and Bedford Street at today’s 105 – 113 Summer Street. At the time, it is reputed to be the only Boston church built facing the sea. At the dedication ceremony, Samuel Cooper Thatcher delivers “An Apology for Rational and Evangelical Christianity,” which Peter Tufts Richardson later calls “the clearest polemic for the new movement” prior to William Ellery Channing’s “Unitarian Christianity.” The congregation moves to Tremont Street (third) in 1868,* and the building is torn down to make way for commercial development.
